GALLIPOLIS — This game was about the Fairland Lady Dragons’ defense and some shooting by Emily Chapman.
The Lady Dragons forced Gallipolis into 37 turnovers and Chapman scored 21 points on seven 3-point goals en route to an easy 76-21 Ohio Valley Conference win on Monday.
“Our goal was to turn them over and we did a good job of that,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan. “We lost up there last year so we had a little motivation.”
Fairland went on a 14-0 run to state the game and led 22-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Chapman scored nine points on three 3-pointers and Allie Marshall got all six of her points in the first quarter for Fairland.
Gallipolis (4-7, 0-5) did get its first field goal until Jennelle Stevens scored at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter.
The Lady Dragons were up 36-9 at the half as Chapman hit two more 3-pointers.
“We played real good in the first quarter and then we dropped off in the second quarter,” said Buchanan. “But we picked things back up and played pretty decent the rest of the game.”
Jackie Wagner scored eight of her 10 points in the second half and Jenna Stone scored five points in the fourth quarter as Fairland continued to pull away.
Besides Chapman’s 21 points and Wagner’s 10, Harley Lyons added eight points and Issy McGinnis and Jenna Stone scored seven each as 11 different players scored.
Hunter Copley scored eight points to lead the Blue Angels.
In league games on Thursday, Fairland visits Chesapeake and Gallipolis goes to Portsmouth.
