On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the food service department of the Dawson-Bryant Local School District was awarded a grant from the Children’s Hunger Alliance to help increase breakfast participation at the high school.

Sonja Hill, of the Children’s Hunger Alliance, presented the $4,000 check to food service director Sharon Brammer.

“I want to thank Sonja Hill and the Children’s Hunger Alliance for the funds to make this project possible,” Brammer said.

Brammer hopes to use those funds to achieve her goal by increasing locations where students have access to breakfast.

“I feel this is very exciting for our district,” she said. “I plan to use the grant to establish a grab-and-go breakfast and coffee cart in the high school.”

Though the district already provides free breakfast in the cafeteria, Brammer hopes the cart will increase participation.

“Placing this cart in the upstairs hall will provide a second option for students to receive a free breakfast which may to be taken to the classroom,” she explained. “Principal Dean Mader is very supportive of this concept and is working with me as a way to ensure more of our students start their day with a nutritious meal.”
