FRANKLIN FURNACE — Symmes Valley coach Donnie Saunders liked what he saw in his three newest additions. He also liked what he saw in his other players.
And they all liked seeing the final score.
With Sam Angelo, Jordan Lucas and Evan Holmes all eligible for the first time this season since transferring, the Vikings got past the Green Bobcats 60-55 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Friday.
The Vikings rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to get the win as Angelo and Lucas combined for 42 points.
“I was proud of them They refused to lose. I liked seeing that in them,” said Saunders about his team.
“Green shot the ball well the first half and even into the third quarter. But we finally calmed them down in the fourth quarter. Holmes and (Hunter) Adams did a nice job defensively.”
Green had their own scoring tandem as Tanner Kimbler hit six 3-pointers and scored 30 points while Tayte Carver scored 21 points.
The Vikings took a 7-0 lead to start the game as Lucas scored five points and Chayden Renfroe hit a 3-pointer. But Kimbler hit three 3-pointers and Carver had four points to give Green a 14-10 lead.
Carver hit a pair of triples and scored 10 points in the second quarter as Green opened up a 32-20 halftime lead. Lucas and Angelo combined for nine points.
Kimbler had two more 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the third quarter, but Angelo scored 10 points while Payton Hayes, Renfroe and Lucas all hit 3-pointers as the Vikings cut the deficit to 48-41.
Symmes Valley limited Green to just one field goal by Carver and Kimbler was 4-of-5 from the foul line for a total of seven points in the fourth quarter.
Angelo scored six more points including 3-of-4 at the foul line, Jarod Sheppard scored all four of his points and Hayes and Lucas had 3-pointers to rally the Vikings to the win.
“We put the clamps on them and wore them down a little bit in the fourth quarter,” said Saunders.
Symmes Valley visits Beaver Eastern on Tuesday and hosts Western on Wednesday.
