JACKSON — In the movie, The Others Guys were comprised of Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and Michael Keaton.
In Monday’s Division III sectional tournament semifinal game, The Other Guys were Nate Harmon, Evan Gannon and Alijah Roman off the bench.
With some help from the bench, the Coal Grove Hornets beat the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes 49-34.
Harmon made a foul shot and had three big rebounds and Gannon drained a pair of 3-pointers to key a pivotal second quarter, and Roman hit a basket and had four rebounds in the fourth quarter to help spark the win.
“Those kids gave us big minutes at the end of the half and got us on a little run,” said Hornets’ second-year coach Kevin Vanderhoof who registered his first career tournament win.
“It’s tournament time and I shortened the bench, but I had to extend it at the end of the first half and they got some rebounds, got a bucket, a foul and made a free throw. They were in there when we made the run. That was encouraging.”
Coal Grove (9-14) will now play top-seeded Fairland at 6 p.m. on Friday in the sectional finals.
Aaron Music had 14 points and fix rebounds and Jeb Jones added seven points, nine rebounds and two steals for Coal Grove. Marks Sites added eight points and three assists.
“Music stepped up. Jones always plays his guts out. When Jeb got his fourth foul I was worried, but other kids stepped up. In the second half Alijah Roman stepped in and made a nice drive to the basket and made both free throws. He gave us good minutes,” said Vanderhoof.
“The thing I was most proud of is I told them I wanted energy. I didn’t feel we didn’t have it early. I thought our energy level picked up. I thought Sites played well. He took the ball to the hole real strong and he’s really good defensively.”
Aron Davis had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Buckeyes (10-13).
N-Y took a 10-7 first quarter lead as the Hornets made only 3-of-11 shots.
The Hornets showed their inexperience and shaky nerves in the first quarter but Vanderhoof said that was to be expected.
“We had only two kids who played on this floor last year. Our defense wasn’t bad. We did a good job rebounding for the most part. We stretched it up to 16 or 17 but we have to shoot free throws better.”
Patrick Gail hit a baseline shot to give the Buckeyes a 15-9 lead at the 4:12 mark, but Coal Grove went on an 11-0 run to end the half including a 3-pointer by Gannon with 25 seconds on the clock and it was 20-15 at the half.
N-Y was within 20-18 but a layup by Jordan Case and a 3-pointer by Music opened up a 27-18 lead.
A put-back by Davis cut the deficit to 29-24 with 3:23 on the click, but Sites and Roman hit layups for a 33-24 lead.
Ethan Bohyer got a laup and Justin Peerry converted a three-point play as the Buckyes got within 33-29.
Music hit another triple to begin the fourth quarter, Sites made a layup and Jaylen McKenzie hit back-to-back layups for a 42-33 lead with 3:58 to go.
McKenzie made another layup and the Hornets went 4-of-5 at the foul line and the lead was 49-33 with 1:05 to play.
