Spelling bee is beneficial

Antiquated and outdated are two words that may not be on the list of those spelled at the upcoming regional spelling bee at Ohio University in Athens on March 18.

However, some may use those words to describe the concept of spelling bees in today’s technology-laden society. But that couldn’t be more off base.

Spelling bees are still relevant and extremely beneficial for our children from elementary school through graduation.

Beyond the obvious advantage of giving them the opportunity to learn and spell a wide variety of words, the process associated with the spelling affords the ability to learn the meaning of those words and can allow them to diversify their vocabulary. Also, it allows our young people to compete against others in their schools, county, state and even the nation.

Spelling bees are extremely important for our young people, as it provides them the ability to learn to spell a variety of words and have a better understanding of what those words actually mean.

In three weeks, Danielle Leonard will represent Ironton Elementary and Lawrence County at the regional spelling bee, with the hopes of earning a spot in the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee May 28-June 3 in National Harbor, Maryland just outside of our nations capital.

We wish Danielle good luck and hope she garners a spot in the national bee.
