Cox leads Fairland trio to district wrestling meet

ALBANY — Mason Cox isn’t just advancing, he’s moving on as a champion.
The Fairland Dragons’ junior wrestler earned a berth in the Division III district tournament was winning his weight class in the sectional tournament on Saturday.
Cox was one of three wrestlers to advance and a total of five wrestlers who placed in the tournament.
The district tournament will be Friday and Saturday at Coshocton.
Cox won the 195-pound class as he decisioned Colten Roark of Federal Hocking 8-2 in the finals match.
Fairland senior Steven Plybon was fourth in the 182-pound class and will advance to the district. Plybon was pinned by Ryan Williams of Nelsonville-York.
The Dragons sophomore Isaiah Eldridge was pinned by Wes Radford of Alexander in the 120-pound division and also finished fourth and earned a berth in the district tournament.
The Chesapeake Panthers had two freshmen place sixth.
Treyvon Wascavage fell to Adrian Salomone of Paint Valley 12-2 in the 138-pound division. Elijah Mills was pinned by Justin Butler of South Gallia in the 145-pound class.
Nelsonville-York edged Westfall for the sectional team title. N-Y had 188.5 points and Westfall 188.
Fairland — with only five wrestlers competing — had 59 points and was ninth among the 20-team field. Chesapeake finished with 13 points and was 18th.
In the Division II sectional, Gallipolis had three champions that included Kyle Greenlee at 113 pounds, Jared Stephens at 126 and Kaleb Chrisenbery at 145. Hunter Jacks was third at 170.
Gallipolis will compete in the district tournament this weekend at Heath High School.
