Plays, concerts on horizon at Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH — Several events are set at Shawnee State University in the coming weeks.

The Portsmouth Area Children’s Theater is putting on its show of The Lion King Jr. at 7 p.m. Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18, as well as a 2:30 p.m. show Sunday, March 19 in the Eloise Covert Smith Theater of the school’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

Tickets for The Lion King Jr. are $12 for both upper tier and lower tier, and $10 for children under 12 for both tiers. Groups of 10 or more people will also receive a discount and receive their tickets for $10 each. At 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, the O’Connor Band with Mark O’Connor will perform in the Eloise Covert Smith Theater of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

Master fiddlers Mark and Maggie O’Connor will be joined by Forrest O’Connor on mandolin and vocals, National Flatpick Guitar Champion Joe Smart and double bassist/old-time banjoist Geoff Saunders.

Standard tickets for the O’Connor Band with Mark O’Connor are $25 for lower tier and $23 for upper tier, senior tickets are $24 for lower tier and $22 for upper tier, student tickets are $17 for lower tier and $16 for upper tier, and tickets for children under 12 and under are $15 for both tiers. Discounts are available for groups or families.

Shawnee State University’s Springfest is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31 in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts and will feature band “We the Kings” and rapper “Waka Flocka Flame.” Ticket information is not yet available, but will be announced soon.
