Pitching helps Pointers notch two wins

SOUTH POINT — Pitching took center stage for the South Point Pointers.

In a season-opening doubleheader against the St. Joseph Flyers, the Pointers got strong pitching to win 10-0 and 7-4.

Logan Wade and Douglas Shaffer combined for a one-hitter in the first game. Wade struck out nine, walked one and gave up the only hit. Shaffer fanned five in two innings.

Isaac Whaley had the Flyers’ lone hit.

South Point had 13 hits as Wade went 2-2, Tanner Hall 2-3, Jonathan Henline 2-3 with three runs batted in, Brody Blackwell 1-2 and an RBI, Dawson Runyon 1-1, Travis Dillon 2-2 and two RBI, Drew Smith and Drake McClure were 1-2 with an RBI, Beau Taylor 1-3 and an RBI, and Wyatt Thacker had an RBI.

In the second game, Henline went five innings to get the win. He struck out 11, walked two and gave up one hit.

The Pointers had 11 hits led by Max Tabor who was 2-2 with a double, Smith who went 2-3 with an RBI and Henline who was 2-3 with a double and an RBI.

McClure was 1-1 and an RBI, Taylor 1-3 and two RBI, Wade and Dillon each went 1-4 with an RBI and Blackwell 1-3.

Clay Willis threw well in defeat. He worked 4.2 innings, fanned four, walked one, and only three of the seven runs were earned.

Tyler Walters was 2-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Flyers. Willis was 1-3 while Gage Butler and Whaley each went 1-4.

St. Joseph hosted Coal Grove on Monday and visits Symmes Valley on Tuesday. South Point hosts Huntington St. Joe on Tuesday.
