Search continues for woman

The search continues for the woman who supposedly jumped off the Ironton-Russell Bridge last week.
Last Wednesday, a call was made to Greenup 911 that someone had parked their car on the bridge and then jumped into the river below.
A running car was found on the bridge and numerous agencies from multiple states joined in the search of the river Wednesday night, including a helicopter from Columbus.
“There’s nothing really new,” said Russell PD Detective Phillip Kerns. “I’ve been following up on different leads.”
The Russell Police Department is in charge of the search because the bridge is their jurisdiction.
Kerns said people have been posting on social media that they saw what happened, “and I had like five people say they saw her jump but they it turned out that every one of them had lied. So, no help there.”
Kerns said they suspect the woman did jump off the bridge but “there is nothing definite. We can’t say that for sure. But everything points to that.”
Kerns said the Russell Fire Department has been actively searching the Ohio River every day but have turned up nothing as of Monday afternoon.
“I’m going out with them (Tuesday) and see what we can come up with,” Kerns said. “But I have been following up on different leads but nothing has panned out yet. As of right now, we don’t have anything, just speculation.”
With the recent heavy rains, the Ohio River is running fast and that may be hindering the search.
“With the river up like it is, it is going to be pretty hard to find anything,” said Ironton Police Department interim chief Joe Ross. “As it goes back down, hopefully, we will be able to continue the search better or someone can find something to turn in to us.”
Although there are rumors going around about who jumped into the Ohio River, Ross said they have not released the name of the woman because they have not made a positive identification yet and until a body is found, they aren’t sure if the woman did jump in the river.
Anyone has any information that could held law enforcement and emergency agencies involved in the search, they are asked to contact the Ironton Police Department at 740-532-2338 or the Greenup County 911.
