FRANKLIN FURNACE — In what was a good staring contest, the Green Bobcats blinked.
Chesapeake Panthers’ Casey McComas and the Bobcats’ Tayte Carver locked up in a classic pitchers’ duel.
But the Bobcats were guilty of five errors and the Panthers took advantage of the mistakes to get a 2-0 win on Saturday.
“We didn’t get the timely hits we needed and we made some errors that gave them their runs,” said Green coach Dan McDavid.
“But overall, it was a good baseball game. Both pitchers threw a heck of a game. But give Chesapeake credit. They made the plays and did what they had to do to win.”
McComas used 78 pitches for his complete game while Carver threw a complete game on 86 pitches. McComas struck out seven and walked one while Carver struck out 13 and walked one.
“That’s as well as I’ve seen Casey throw. He threw 58 strikes and 21 first-pitch strikes. All that adds up to be pretty good,” said Panthers’ coach Justin Davis.
“We beat a good team. It was nice that we bounced back after how we played earlier today.”
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning.
Austin Browning reached second base as Green (5-2) had two errors on the play. Browning then stole third base and scored on a throwing error.
The Panthers (4-3) added another unearned run in the sixth.
With one out, Josh Hansen singled and Dalton Nida put down a sacrifice bunt. But the Bobcats made a throwing error on the play to put runners on the corners.
With two outs, Hansen scored on the throw when Nida stole second.
On Monday, Green hosts Portsmouth Clay and Chesapeake travels to Gallipolis.
