WESTWOOD, Ky. — Who said Nate Harmon was a rookie?
Harmon was making his varsity debut on Thursday but pitched like a veteran as the Coal Grove Hornets beat the Fairview Eagles 14-5.
Harmon went four innings for the win. He struck out five, walked three and allowed only four hits.
“Harmon threw the ball well. It was his first varsity start and he was throwing strikes and looking like he’d done this before,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.
“We hit the ball hard. In this type of game, you have to stay locked in and hit a good pitch. We drove the ball well.”
Coal Grove had (5-2) had 13 hits as Jacob Clark, Jeb Jones and Darin Bloomfield each went 2-4. Clark had two doubles and Jones and Darin Bloomfield one each.
Coal Grove took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Clark doubled, Daniel Rutherford walked, they pulled off a double steal and both scored on an error. Dylan Malone then tripled and Bloomfield doubled.
Fairview got a run in the second but the Hornets scored two in the third.
Rutherford walked, stole second and scored on Jeb Jones’ double. Malone was safe on an error, stole second and Jordan Case singled in a run.
The Eagles got within 5-4 in the bottom of the third, but the Hornets answered with three in the fourth and were never threatened.
Clark and Rutherford walked to begin the fourth and Jones had a two-run single. Malone and Bloomfield walked and Case hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored.
Coal Grove hosts Chesapeake on Friday and visits Rock Hill at noon on Saturday.
