PEDRO — Give the Rock Hill Redmen an inch and they’ll take 90 feet.
The Redmen took advantage of a couple of errors to score runs as they beat the Coal Grove Hornets 5-2 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Saturday.
Cody Lewis pitched a six-hitter and the Redmen played errorless defense. Lewis struck out 10 and walked only one.
The Redmen had only three hits.
“Cody pitched well and our kids played good defense behind him. We were patient at the plate and took advantage of their mistakes,” said Redmen coach Barry Litteral.
“We put the ball in play, took advantage of some errors and some walks and got key hits when we needed them and executed well.”
Rock Hill (6-2, 4-2) took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first when Logan Hankins doubled and Kaleb Kidd singled.
Coal Grove (6-3, 4-2) tied the game in the top of the fourth.
Jeb Jones doubled, went to third on a ground out and came home when Jordan Case beat out an infield hit.
But Rock Hill came back to score four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Kidd walked, went to second on Landon Smith’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Kyle Stanfield’s base hit.
Stanfield stole second and scored when Kaden France reached on an error. Seth Nichols walked, Mason Darby hit into a fielder’s choice and Jake Blagg reached on an error as a run scored.
Cody Lewis and Hankins then walked to force in a run.
The Hornets added a run in the sixth when Jones singled, stole second, moved up on a wild pitch and came home when Case grounded out.
The two teams meet again Monday at Coal Grove.
