Earl Schilling
Sept. 15, 1938 — April 17, 2017
Earl P. (Pat) Schilling, 78, of Ironton, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017, after a brief illness, while under the care of the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland. Pat was born Sept. 15, 1938, in Ironton, to the late Earl H. and Helen Schilling, and was a 1956 graduate of Ironton High School. Pat married Verna M. Stamper on March 28, 1959, and they were married for 56 years, until her passing in 2015.
Pat operated, along with his father, E.H. Schilling & Sons Contractors (later Schilling Contractors), and retired from the business in 1999. Since his retirement, he ran PVS Rentals from his home and enjoyed working daily along side his good friend, Coss Cochran. He was a long-term member of the Ohio Operating Engineers Union, Local 18, from which he received a 50-year service award in 2014.
Pat was an active member of Ironton First Church of the Nazarene, where he ushered for many years and assisted and supported various ministries of the church. Pat was active with Gideon International, and enjoyed Bible distribution at high schools, and other related events of the organization. He supported local community events, such as the Hanging Rock Kids Fun Day and enjoyed mentoring young people who he felt he could help. He was well known in the area, and had many wonderful friendships that he greatly cherished.
In addition to his parents, Pat was preceded in death by his wife, Verna.
He is survived by one son, Jeff (Sheri) Schilling, of Wooster; two grandsons, Ryan Schilling and Kevin Schilling, both of Wooster, and currently full time students. He has brothers and sisters-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews from his wife’s side of the family, enjoying good relationships with many of them. A special friend to Pat and the family in recent months, Ruth Stephenson, has been a support during this time.
Pat was very mechanical, and had the ability to repair many things, enjoying the challenge of determining what made something work or not work properly. He always had a story to tell, repeated them many times and laughed the same every time. He was a loyal friend, great father, grandfather and father-in-law. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ironton First Church of the Nazarene, Ironton, with the Rev. Rob Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and noon until the time of the service Saturday at the church.
