CHESAPEAKE — Maybe the Chesapeake Lady Panthers know how to work a backhoe.
After digging themselves an early hole, the Lady Panthers gradually dug their way out and beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 4-3 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Brooke Webb pitched a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts and just two walks to get the win.
“They scored three runs and get three of their hits in the first and then get one hit the rest of the way, so Brooke settled down and threw well,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Aaron Rice.
“We got some clutch hits and Brooke threw a nice game. Portsmouth has a good team and their pitcher does a nice job.”
Andi Queen took the loss as she gave up seven hits, struck out one and walked three.
Portsmouth got all its runs in the first inning.
Queen singled, moved up on a passed ball and went to third when Semajah Parker reached on an error. Parker moved up and Eliza Gullett had a two-run single.
Gullett went to second on the throw home and Layla Kelsis followed with an RBI single.
Chesapeake got a run back in the second when Jordan Storms reached on an error, Lyric Bair doubled and another error scored the run.
In the fourth, Breanna Russell walked, Holly Lunsford was safe on an error, Jenny Mills singled and Ashley Tackett hit a sacrifice fly and it was 3-2.
The Lady Panthers tied the game in the fifth when Webb drilled a leadoff home run.
Chesapeake (8-7, 5-4) got the winning run in the sixth with two outs.
Ryleigh Swann singled, Katy Spears reached on an error, Webb got an intentional walk and Storms followed with a walk to force in Swann.
Swann was 3-4 to lead Chesapeake while Bair went 2-4 with a double.
Queen was 2-3 for Portsmouth.
On Monday, Chesapeake visits Ironton and Portsmouth is at South Point.
