WHEELERSBURG — Talk about your classics!
The Wheelersburg Lady Pirates scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to escape the Rock Hill Redwomen 1-0 on Tuesday.
Jill Hairston pitched seven shutout innings for Rock Hill as she struck out one, did not walk a batter and scattered eight hits.
Faith Howard pitched a one-hitter for the Pirates. She struck out 11 and walked one.
“Jill pitched an awesome game. She was dominant on the mound for us,” said Rock Hill coach Brooke Long. “I can’ say enough about her effort tonight. She does whatever is asked of her day in and day out.
“We played a solid defensive game behind Jill. Everybody stepped up and made big plays in the field. I’m proud of the way we played tonight. We knew going it that we were facing a great team and we battled until the end.”
The only run scored when Kalle Coleman got a leadoff single, Taylor Fannin sacrificed her to second and Kasey Bergan got an RBI single.
Gracie Stevens had a single for Rock Hill’s lone hit.
Rock Hill visits Portsmouth on Wednesday.
