Brick street repairs to begin soon

It was a short meeting of the Ironton City Council on Thursday.
Since the 6 p.m. meeting was on the same night as Ohio University Southern graduation, Vice Mayor Craig Harvey wasn’t present because he had to attend the ceremony since he is employed at OUS.
That left the other council members trying to figure out who had to run the meeting. Normally, the person who got the next number of votes would run it but that was Beth Rist who was also not present. So the duty fell to Kevin Waldo.
Once that was settled and the meeting begun, Mayor Katrina Keith apologized for only giving a quick update since she had leave to get to OUS before 6:30 p.m. since she was the keynote speaker.
She said that the Ironton downtown cleanup day was May 6.
“Ironton residents, since we are part of Upper Township, can take it to Kitts Hill area,” she said. “Right now, we are trying to find out where that dump site will be.”
There will be dumpsters for the downtown cleanup.
There won’t be dumpsters in town for residents to throw out stuff, because there is no funding in the Lawrence Scioto Solid Waste District’s budget for it this year.
“The only thing we can’t do is go through the alleys and pick stuff up like we usually do,” Keith said.
She spoke with the contractor and the work will begin in a week or so on replacing the brick in the streets where sewer lines were separated from drainage lines. There was some confusion as to whether or not the bricks were going to be put back, although the council approved the replacement project last month.
“Those bricks will be replaced,” Keith said. “Apparently it is out there that we are going to throw asphalt on there because of recent post that we were going to be asphalting. Asphalt will not go there, it is a brick replacement project.”
There were four items on the agenda.
The first item on the agenda was amending the city budget. The second item on the agenda was the salary being set was for the finance director. It will be $58,652.07 for 2017.
The third item on the agenda was for the city to pay Ackerman Construction $37,500 for roof repair to the municipal water filtration plant facility. The fourth item on the agenda was to allow SBA Communications to sublease space on a cell tower to T-Mobile. Per its lease contract, SBA has to inform the city of any changes to the tower.
All were sent to the Council’s finance committee so ordinances can be discussed before they go up for vote.
The city council meets next on May 11.
