Event serves seniors well

For any business or organization, the goal is to continue to see growth year after year. The same can be said for any civic organization, like the Sybene-Chesapeake Senior Center, which put on its third annual Lawrence County Senior Citizens Day at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds this week.

Each year, the goal to increase the number of vendors and attendees has been accomplished, with this year’s estimate of 1,500 attendees more than triple that of the event’s first year. Added to that, this year’s senior day included more than 80 vendors who provided event-goers with free information and services like haircuts and health screenings.

In all, Lawrence County Senior Citizens Day is a huge success, and it is because of the hard work of so many. There are numerous volunteers that work throughout the year to put this day on, and we want to commend them for their efforts. But we also want to say a special “Thank you” to Sybene-Chesapeake Senior Center Director Darlene Green, who has been involved with, and served, the senior citizens program in Lawrence County for many years.

While the senior citizens program has seen some changes over the years, those charged with leading the programs and events have done a wonderful job providing our senior residents in the county with a bevy of opportunity to get out and fellowship with one another.
