Fair is a county asset

The 2017 Lawrence County Fair reaches its midpoint today, with events continuing until Saturday.

The weather has been temperate for early July, rain has been at a minimum and, as is the case every year, the event has served as an opportunity for the community to get out and take part in a fun atmosphere.

While the rides and entertainment are a large draw, more importantly, the fair has rewarded future farmers and members of 4-H groups from throughout the county for their efforts.

Children and teens have exhibited their livestock and tobacco crops at the fair and have been awarded for both their work raising their animals and for their ability to present them to the judges.

And at the auctions, set for Saturday, they will get a chance to earn a financial reward as well. Proceeds from the sales go directly to the 4-H members and provide them with income for personal expenses or, if they wish to pursue them, future endeavors in farming.

We commend the 4-H organizers, the Ohio University Extension Office, the local judges and all others who work to bring these opportunities to the fair every year.
