This week, the South Point Board of Education approved a $596,163 contract for the installation of synthetic turf on athletic fields at the high and middle school complex.
The deal provides for new turf on the softball and baseball infields and will also pay for the renovation of the natural surface on the baseball outfield.
In addition, this amount covers an eight-year warranty for the new turf, and officials were able to negotiate for additional work, such as adding concrete curbing to prevent the growth of weeds along the fences.
Superintendent Mark Christian said the company, The Motz Group, is famous for their work with synthetic turf, having done job for several major athletic parks.
While the figure might appear high at first glance, the synthetic turf is significantly cheaper to maintain than natural grass.
Rock Hill schools recently installed a similar turf for their grounds, and Christian said after 15 years, the installation could allow the district to break even and possibly save money.
It is good to see that school board members have used foresight in negotiating this contract and are considering long-term financial aspects.
Through their diligence, this will ensure that local students will have the best possible facilities for years to come.
