Regina Monnig

Sister Regina (Gretta) Monnig, 84, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minnesota, died at Assisi Heights on Thursday, July 20, 2017.
Regina Louise Monnig was born Dec. 3, 1932, in Ironton, to Otto and Mary Agnes (Boll) Monnig. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1951 from Saint Mary Parish, Pine Grove. Sister Regina made her first vows in 1953, and perpetual vows in 1956. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of Saint Teresa, Winona, Minnesota (1957); a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. (1965) and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Educational Psychology (1975).
Sister Regina served at Saint Mary’s Hospital as a staff nurse from 1953 to 1963, and again from 1965 to 1968 as a supervisor/faculty member of St Mary’s School of Nursing.
From 1969-1971, she was an instructor in the Nursing program at the College of Saint Teresa, Winona, Minnesota. She served as professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota and as project director of the Minnesota Nursing Association Career Mobility Study from 1971 to 1974. She returned to College of Saint Teresa as chair and associate professor in the Department of Nursing. From 1978 to 1998, Sister Regina served as academic dean and professor of nursing in several nursing programs: Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas; University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky; Adult Nursing Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia; Tennessee State University, Nashville, Tennessee; Bellarmine College, Louisville, Kentucky, and University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Sister Regina served as an Air Force Reserve Nurse beginning in 1972, and received an honorable discharge in May 1992. She retired in 1998 and returned to Assisi Heights in 2009.
Sister Regina is survived by her Franciscan congregation, with whom she shared life for 66 years; a brother, Frederick Monnig, of Ironton; a sister, Ann Sommer, of Lebanon; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and three brothers, Otto, Paul and Ambrose Monnig.
A Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes at Assisi Heights, Rochester, Minnesota. A prayer service begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, followed by visitation up to the time of the service. Sister Regina made the gift of an anatomical bequest to Mayo Clinic. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rochester, Minnesota at a later date.

Vaughn Martin

Dec. 28, 1923 — July 18, 2017

Vaughn Martin, 93, of Ironton, previously of Hurricane, West Virginia, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Heartland of Riverview. The Culloden, West Virginia native was born Dec. 28, 1923, a son of the late Zell and Gladys Clark Martin. He is survived by his wife, Janie Drummond Martin.
Mr. Martin was a graduate of Culloden Schools and was a U.S. WWII Navy veteran, serving on the USS Alabama. He was a former engineer for Dow Chemical in Charleston, West Virginia. He was of Baptist faith and loved boating and camping. He was also a Mason for 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Leotise Martin, Aaron Martin and Warner Martin.
In addition to his wife, Janie Martin, he is survived by a brother, Bob Martin, of Culloden, West Virginia; a daughter, Sandra (Timmy) Garrett, of Hurricane, West Virginia; a son, Scott (Margie) Martin, of Culloden, West Virginia; a stepson, Tom (Darla) Fraley, of Greenup, Kentucky; a stepdaughter, Rachel (Johnny Jr.) Hughes, of Ironton; grandchildren, Christina, Daniel and Timmy Jr.; step-grandchildren, Justin, Chelsi, Kylie, Brad and Jacob; and great-grandchildren, Jenna, Emily, Jacob and Caleb.

Shirley Taylor

Shirley C. Greene Taylor, 80, of Argilite, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at her residence. She is survived by her husband, Wilbur B. Taylor. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Bailey Family Funeral Home, Flatwoods, Kentucky, with the Rev. Mike Sargent and the Rev. Sheldon Wheeler officiating. Ruby Johnson

May 27, 1930 — July 21, 2017

Ruby Jane (Steed) Johnson, 87, of Ironton, passed away Friday, July 21, 2017, at a local nursing home facility. Mrs. Johnson was born in Kitts Hill on May 27, 1930, a daughter to the late Lloyd and Sadie (Ellis) Steed-Rawlins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson attended Dawson-Bryant High School. She was a retired baseball assembler for Wilson’s Sporting Goods. Ruby enjoyed going to flea markets and reading.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by grandson, Charles Jason “Chad” Major; and stepfather, William R. Rawlins.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith Johnson, of Wheelersburg, and Diana Johnson-Waldsmith, of Del Ray Beach, Florida; two granddaughters, Jaime Traywick, of Gallipolis, and Amanda Major, of Delray Beach, Florida; two great grandchildren, Ava Facemyer and Jackson Facemyer, both of Gallipolis; and sister, Elosie Rutledge, of Winterhaven, Florida.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Gary Arthurs officiating. Burial will follow in Buckeye Cemetery and visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
