Fair site upgrade a positive

An agreement between the Lawrence County Commission and the County Fair board will lead to upgrades of the fairgrounds.
A new EMS station, which will serve the eastern half of the county, will be located at the fairgrounds, while a senior center and a community center will be located on the eastern end of the property.
The senior center will replace the Sybene-Chesapeake senior center, currently located in a modular unit beside the Chesapeake Community Center.
The community center will be available for different functions throughout the year, as well as be open during fair week.
The senior center has served the community well, sponsoring a number of events throughout the year, and becoming well-known for drawing hundreds to its monthly “Our Day” dinners. A new facility is well-deserved.
As a county heavy in farming, Lawrence County depends on the fair and the fairgrounds as a showcase for what it has to offer.
Any improvements to the area are a good step for all.
We commend the fair board, the port authority and members of the commission who worked to make this possible.
