More educational options

This week, students at the new STEM+M school in South Point reported to class for the first time, the first group to attend the latest public school in Lawrence County.
Focused on the fields of science, technology, engineering, math and medicine, the school offers a four-year program to prepare students for college and careers in what will be the top jobs of tomorrow.
The school is making a real attempt to break with the confines of a traditional classroom, offering a more hands-on approach to learning. Instructors at the school have said it is not their goal to simply deliver a lecture and have students take a test.
This could be seen, even on the first day of “immersion week” on Monday, where students were asked to make up their own rules for the school and to share their expectations for their education.
It is promising that Lawrence County students have this new option for an alternative form of learning, dedicated to science.
And it is important to remember that the new school in South Point is not the only option available to students. Thanks to Collins Career Technical Center’s team in the Project Lead the Way program, students can receive a STEM education at their high school, without having to leave their district.
May both of these programs thrive and provide students with a chance to explore as many career paths as possible.
