COAL GROVE — The numbers were pretty even. Except where it counts.
The Coal Grove Hornets had 241 total yards and the Portsmouth West Senators 236. But West took advantage of four interceptions to post a 28-6 win on Friday.
Coal Grove (2-1) took a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 2-yard scoring pass from Nate Harmon to Kyle Sites.
West (3-0) tied the game on a 3-yard run by Garrett Hurd in the second quarter and Drew Cassidy kicked the conversion with 7:39 on the clock.
The Senators extended the lead to 14-6 on a 9-yard run by Josh Berry halfway through the third quarter.
The lead went to 21-6 when Cody Staggs caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Bradford just before the end of the quarter.
West capped the scoring on a 2-yard run by Hurd with 7:48 to play.
Coal Grove had 104 yards rushing with Harmon running 11 times for 52 yards. He was 17-of-25 passing for 137 yards. Kimo Baldwin ran 12 times for 39 yards.
Bradford was 11-of-16 passing for 105 yards while Hurd carried 18 times for 72 yards and two scores.
Coal Grove visits South Point next Friday.
