Charles Payne Sr.
Feb. 27, 1940 — Sept. 11, 2017
Charles Frederick “Butch” Payne Sr., 77, of Ironton, passed away Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, at his residence. The Ironton native was born Feb. 27, 1940, a son of the late George Washington Payne and Bertha Ann Leach Payne.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Clara Jean Shore Payne, whom he married Sept. 18, 1966.
Butch attended Ironton High School and was a former chef for the Sir Georges Buffet. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and loved to watch sports, enjoyed bowling, fishing and spending time with his kids going on vacation. He attended the Centenary United Methodist Church in Coal Grove.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ellis Payne, Robert Payne and George Payne; and four sisters, Wanda Overturf, Ethel Robinson, Norma Sierer and Lucille Payne.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Maria Jeanette Alley, of Long Beach, California, and Christina Sue Payne, of California; a son, Charles Frederick Payne Jr., of Las Vegas, Nevada; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with Chaplain Dan Spreacker officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.
