Dorothy Cochran

March 29, 1951 — Sept. 24, 2017

Dorothy Ann Cochran, nee Asbury, age 66, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017. A private viewing took place at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home.
Dorothy was born on March 29, 1951, in Ironton, to the late Clyde Asbury and Verna Ingles. She attended Symmes Valley High School for three years, going on to obtain her GED and earned a few college credits later. Dorothy married her devoted husband, Carl Edward Cochran Sr., on Oct. 18, 1974, and made her home with him in Kitts Hill.
She leaves behind her husband; as well as sons, Jeromy Willis and Carl Edward (Melissa Emery) Cochran Jr.; daughters, Carlena (Steve) Austin and Carla (Mike) Daniel; grandchildren, Mackenzie Dickess, Briana Dickess, Seth Daniel, Brittany Markins, Lily Cochran and Anabelle Cochran; great-grandchildren, Brody Lucas, Brinley Markins and Pheobe Dickess; sister, Freda Ross; brother, Donald Asbury; sister, Dora Webb; and niece, Donna Jean Cochran.
She was preceded in death by her mother; father; sister, Faye Asbury; and brothers, Bill, Robert and Clyde Asbury (Junior).
Dorothy was known by many affectionate nicknames, including “Dottie,” “Wild Woman,” “Mam Maw,” “Pall MallMaw,” “Momma Smurf” and “Old Woman.” Each name reflected her personality and important roles as wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Dorothy was a unique individual, a character to be sure, who had many hobbies in life. Scratch offs, bingo, slots, games, bonfires and scary movies are just a few.
She loved shopping for treasures at Goodwill. She loved price matching at Walmart. She always managed to spend hours in both stores. We, on the other hand, always spent those hours trying to find her in the aisles.
She was stubborn and picky (especially about food). She talked to everyone she met. She smoked like a freight train and drank nothing but coffee with hazelnut creamer. It had to be hazelnut and it had to be good coffee.
She worked hard all her life, starting as a kid working on her family’s tobacco farm. From there, she moved on to various jobs, including waitress, cook, healthcare aide, cleaning lady, cashier, launderer, window assembler, laborer and industrial cleaner. Her resume was long and varied, because no job was too tough for her. She possessed a strong work ethic, working many years outside the home until her health no longer permitted it.
She loved her cats and fussed with them daily. She spoiled her grandkids, especially the youngest, whom we refer to as “Mini Mam Maw.” She was always a busy bee, cleaning, helping with the new house or working on one of her many random “projects.”
She always made our favorite meals and a few of her own concoctions no one will ever be able to re-create (e.g., goulash).
She was strong. She had endured much in her life without falter. She was a tireless caregiver, counselor and advisor. She was a woman of many antics.
She regularly spoke her mind. She didn’t care what others thought. Her laugh made us laugh. Her hairstyles, bathing suits and outfits were legendary. There will never be another person quite like her.
She was married for nearly 43 years to a man whom she dubbed with a loving nickname we can’t appropriately feature here.
Though she didn’t show her emotions often, she made her love for us well known through her actions and her words. She was always there for us when we needed her. She gave us so much and asked for nothing in return.
We love her deeply. We miss her greatly. We will always keep her in our hearts and minds. We will keep her in our memories by reminiscing about the many stories of her life.
