Explore our region’s rich history

On Saturday, The Lawrence County Historical Society hosted the annual Historical Ghost Walk at Woodland Cemetery.
The event gave attendees a chance to learn of prominent names from our region’s past, as actors portrayed the notable names buried in Ironton, from Nannie Kelly Wright, the first female ironmaster, to Antoinette Peters, a ballerina who danced for the courts of Russian Tsar Nicholas II.
People learned of unsolved murders, such as that of Dr. Joseph Lowery, and the tale of Martha “Lorena” Johnson, who was the subject of a song beloved by both sides in the American Civil War era.
Taking place for the last 15 years, the event draws hundreds each time, and throughout the 28 stations at the cemetery, people listened to the stories and learned of the rich history of our region and, hopefully, came away with new knowledge on what has come before.
This unique event is a great educational experience for the crowds and the organizers should be thanked for putting it on each year.
We encourage everyone who went, as well as those who may have missed the event, to further study the history of our region by visiting the Lawrence County Historical Society and Museum, located here on South Sixth Street.
Its exhibits and collections, as well as its helpful staff, are a wonderful starting point to finding out about the past.
