McDERMOTT — Such is the game of golf.
The Coal Grove Hornets senior Trevor Deere came close only to fall a few shots shy of reaching the state tournament.
The boys’ Division III district was held on Monday at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club and Deere finished third overall with a 76 on rounds of 37 and 39. Deere was just four shot behind the medalist after finishing sixth at the sectional.
Elijah McCarty of West Union shot a 72 to take medalist honors and earn the state tournament bid. Broc Jordan of Latham Western shot a 74 to finish runner-up.
The tough break for Deere was the fact that only one team and one individual qualifies for the state tournament in the Southeast Division III district.
Coal Grove had reached the district tournament for the sixth time by finishing third at the sectional tournament.
Besides Deere, Jed Whitworth had an 84 and was 15th overall followed by Jake Sites with an 89 to place 26th, Garrett Holiday was No. 32 with a 92 and Ethan Wilson had a 96 to place 39th.
North Adams won the tournament with a 328 team score followed by West Union with a 332, Crooksville at 339, Coal Grove 341, Waterford 352, Racine Southern 353, Western 357, Reedsville Eastern 362, Whiteoak 404 and Lynchburg-Clay 413.
