The Ohio University Southern Community Band will perform its annual Christmas concert on at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Ironton Briggs Library, 321 South Fourth St., in Ironton. Admission is free.

The community band is a small concert band consisting of about 20 students and non-students from the greater tri-state area which performs several times a year on and off campus. In October the band performed its annual fall concert at Ohio University Southern and more recently performed for the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce Festival of Trees in South Point, and in the Ashland and Ironton Christmas parades.

Participants come from all walks of life and range in age from teenagers to those in their 70s. Several of the members joined the band after decades of not playing an instrument and have flourished.

The band performs standard concert band arrangements, ranging from easy to medium difficulty, and representing a variety of musical styles and genres. These include: marches, music from musicals and TV shows, pop music (including jazz, ragtime, rock & roll), and arrangements of major orchestra works.

The band also performs pops, Civil War/patriotic, and Christmas-themed programs.

The Ohio University Southern Community Band is always looking for new members.

The band rehearses on Monday nights, 6-7:30 p.m., in the Ironton High School band room.

There is no audition. High school band experience, basic music reading and musicianship skills, and access to a woodwind or brass instrument is required. Percussion instruments are provided.
