PORTSMOUTH — When the offense isn’t clicking, the defense has to pick up the slack.
The Chesapeake Lady Panthers relied on their defense in a 43-27 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Portsmouth Lady Trojans on Monday.
“Defensively we showed up. Offensively, we have to score but coach (Kristen) Bradshaw does a good job keeping (Portsmouth) active on defense,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.
Natalee Hall had 13 points plus eight assists and eight steals to lead Chesapeake (4-1, 3-0). Brooke Webb scored 14 points and had two blocks as the senior duo took care of the offense.
Karli Davis had nine rebounds and Shia Ervin grabbed six for the Lady Panthers.
Jasmine Eley scored 17 points to pace Portsmouth (0-5, 0-4).
Hall scored four points in the first quarter as Chesapeake went up 10-4.
Webb four in the second quarter and Maddie Ward hit a 3-pointer as the Lady Panthers pushed the lead to 20-12 at the half. Sharia Kearns made four foul shots for Portsmouth.
Hall and Webb got four points each in the third quarter of offset a pair of 3-pointers by Eley as Chesapeake went up 28-18.
Both seniors scored four points in the fourth quarter as Chesapeake outscored Portsmouth 15-9. Eley had seven of the Lady Trojans’ points.
On Thursday, Chesapeake hosts Ironton and Portsmouth entertains Fairland.
