WILLOW WOOD — The Symmes Valley Vikings played really well in a lot of their game on Tuesday.
Imagine what they could do if they put a whole game together.
The Vikings turned in a good performance as they beat the Sciotoville East Tartans 67-55 in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
“We really played hard tonight and we were able to get a big win,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Coffman. “I thought the boys had stretches where they played very good basketball.
“When the game was on the line, we were able to get stops in the half-court and win the game. I was very pleased with our toughness.”
Brock Carpenter had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Vikings (3-3, 2-3). Layken Gothard had 17 points, five assists and four steals while Hunter Adams finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Will Shope scored 23 points and J.D. Hatcher 15 to lead East.
The Vikings took a 19-15 first quarter lead as Gothard scored seven points including a 3-pointer, Carpenter had six points and Adams four. Shope hit a pair of 3-pointers and Kyle Flannery one for East.
Carpenter had a 3-pointer and scored five points in the second quarter as the Vikings went up 33-27 at the half. Shope had five points and Hatcher four points for the Tartans.
East cut the deficit to 43-40 at the end of the third quarter as Hatcher scored seven points and Shope four. Nick Klaiber had all four of his points in the quarter for the Vikings.
Shope scored eight points as East stayed close in the fourth quarter until Derik Brace buried back-to-back 3-pointers as the Vikings went 8-of-12 at the foul line to pull away. Jack Leith was 5-of-7 at the line and Gothard 3-of-5.
The Vikings visit Portsmouth Clay on Friday.
In the reserve game, Symmes Valley (6-0, 5-0) won 48-32 as Drew Scherer scored 19, Justin White nine and Luke Leith seven. Heffmon had 13 and Smith 10 for East.
