CHEROKEE, N.C. — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets saved their best for last.
The last quarter, that is.
Coal Grove broke a tie game by outscoring the Mountain View (Ga.) Lady Bears by 10 points in the fourth quarter to post a 71-61 win in the Cherokee Holiday on the Hardwood Classic on Wednesday.
“They are quick, extremely long and athletic,” Coal Grove coach Rick Roach said of the Lady Bears.
“We got down 10 in the third but kept battling. Compliment was shooting well and Hall was doing a great job of slashing.”
Alexis Hall scored 25 points and Emily Compliment scored 21 to lead the Lady Hornets (6-1).
Kamryn Collins scored 25 points for Mountain View (9-4) with Lilian Kennedy scored 21 and Alea Spears added 14.
Compliment hit a 3-pointer and scored eight points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 15-13 lead. Collins scored nine points and Spears four to account for the Lady Bears’ scoring.
Collins scored nine more points and Kennedy had five as Mountain View rallied to take a 31-27 halftime lead.
Hall and Lauren Crum scored four points each for Coal Grove.
Coal Grove came back to tie the game at 45 in the third quarter as Hall and Compliment scored eight points each. Collins had seven points for the Lady Bears.
The Lady Hornets outscored Mountain View 26-16 in the fourth quarter as Hall scored nine points including 4-of-4 at the line. Compliment, Bailey McKnight and Kasey Murphy — who was 2-of-2 at the line — all scored four points each.
Kennedy poured in 12 points in the quarter but Collins failed to score.
“Rebounding was an issue early, but (Destiny) Dolen and Murphy kept getting more aggressive as the game went on,” said Roach.
Coal Grove plays again on Thursday and Friday.
