Defense sparks Lady Dragons win

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Fairland Lady Dragons weren’t shooting the ball well, so they made sure their opponents didn’t’ either.
Fairland was only 15-of-38 for 39 percent from the field including a dismal 1-of-17 from the 3-point line.
But the defense force 21 turnovers including eight steals and the Lady Dragons held the North Point (Md.) Lady Eagles to 30 percent shooting in a 45-33 win on Friday in the Title IX Holiday Classic.
Emily Chapman had 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals to lead Fairland (7-2). Kelsie Warnock had 12 points and two steals while Alesha Simpson pulled down 10 rebounds.
Latavia Jackson scored 15 points and Synia Johnson 11 for North Point (3-2).
Fairland took a 10-4 lead on a basket by Chapman with 4:57 left in the first quarter. Jackson made two foul shots with 26 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 10.
Simpson’s foul shot put Fairland up 13-12 but Jackson hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Eagles a 15-13 lead and it was 17-15 at the half.
Johnson’s 3-pointer made it 20-15 early in the third quarter but Fairland came back to tie the game at 20 on a basket by Wilson. Davia Jenifer hit a 3-pointer and North Point was up 23-20.
Allie Marshall scored with 4:14 on the third quarter clock and Fairland led 24-23 and Wilson’s basket made it 26-23. Johnson and Chapman traded baskets as Fairland went up 28-27 at the end of the quarter.
The game was tied at 29 when Wilson got a basket, Warnock hit two straight and Simpson made a 3-pointer for a 38-29 lead with 4:34 left.
Two free throws by Chapman stretched the lead to 43-33 with 23 seconds to play.
Fairland will host Gallipolis next Thursday.
