SCIOTOVILLE — Willie Nelson can’t wait to get on the road again. That’s because he’s not a basketball coach.
The St. Joseph Flyers played well but so did the Sciotoville East Tartans. But the Flyers found a way to go on the road and get a win as they beat the Tartans 69-62 on Friday.
Chase Walters had 21 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead a balanced Flyers’ offense.
Zach Roach scored 16 points to go with five assists, Clay Willis had 1 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals while Joey McDavid added 12 points and two steals.
The Flyers were 25-of-42 from the field 59.5 percent and had 18 assists.
“Any time you go on the road against a formidable team with three or four kids back and win, it’s a good win,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
“We got good balanced, we shot the ball well and we shared the ball well. We played pretty good defense but some of their shots were deep and contested. You have to give them some credit.”
Kyle Flannery hit six 3-pointers and scored 26 points to lead East. Will Shope added 15 points.
“They hit some shots from 24 and 25 feet. That gym is a tough place to play,” said Cooksey.
St. Joseph took an 18-12 first quarter lead as Walters had seven points and McDavid five.
Roach scored five and Willis four in the second quarter but East cut the deficit to 33-31 at the break.
Walters got five of his team’s seven points in the third quarter. The Flyers had a 40-38 lead with 36 seconds on the clock but East scored five quick points and led 43-40.
Walters had nine points and Roach seven and Willis six in the fourth quarter. Willis hit a big shot that gave the Flyers a seven-point lead with 2:30 to play.
The Flyers were 14-of-18 from the foul line including 12-of-15 in the fourth quarter.
“We came out in the fourth quarter and got some stops and hit big shots,” said Cooksey whose team outscored East 29-19 in the fourth quarter.
St. Joseph hosts Fairview, Ky., on Tuesday.
