Janet Mende

Sept. 6, 1940- Dec. 22, 2017

Janet L. (Conaway) Mende, 77, a native of Ironton, entered into eternal rest on Dec. 22, 2017 after a long illness and surrounded by family at home in East Tennessee where she had lived the past 19 years.
Born Sept. 6, 1940 to the late Pearl and Edith (Rice) Conaway, Janet was of the Catholic faith and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School before earning a scholarship to St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Huntington. She then held several positions in local hospitals before moving to Mansfield, Ohio in 1964 where she worked in hospitals, nursing homes and in retail.
Janet was a devoted homemaker, mother and grandmother who was actively involved in school and community organizations in northern Ohio, where she and her husband of 55 years, Paul (Ace) Mende, raised their sons Greg Mende, of Louisville, Kentucky and Vic Mende, of Maryville, Tennessee. Also surviving are Vic’s five children, a brother, Tim Conaway of Minnesota, and a sister, Sharon (“Shari”) Staton of Elmore, Alabama. She was preceded in death by brothers, Carl, Lloyd and Doug Conaway and sister, Patricia Jane Conaway.
An irrepressible spirit if there ever was one, Janet was well-known for her outgoing, gregarious personality and considerable sense of humor which put all who knew her at ease. She enjoyed board games, crossword puzzles and watching her sons play sports and music. Janet was also an accomplished artist, with several of her watercolor paintings appearing in juried shows throughout northern Ohio where both individuals and businesses purchased many of her works over the years.
Per Janet’s wishes, no funeral services were held, and in keeping with her training and lifelong interest in health care, she chose to donate her remains for scientific study at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.
