Cold 2nd quarter costly to Lady Dragons in loss to Quakers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Fairland Lady Dragons couldn’t shift from first to second gear.

Fairland jumped out to an 8-point first quarter lead, then struggled in the second quarter and went on to lose 56-44 to the Sidwell Friends Quakers on Saturday in the Title IX Classic.

The loss spoiled a 25-point performance by Emily Chapman who hit seven 3-point goals to go with five assists and three steals.

Alesha Simpson made three 3-pointers for nine points. Allie Marshall had six rebounds and Taylar Wilson five.

Annie Boasberg scored 20 points while Olivia Pickens and 6-foot Nalani Lyde had 10 points each. Lyde also had 13 rebounds.

Fairland (7-3) went up 11-10 on two free throws by Kelsie Warnock but the Quakers tied it on a free throw by Lyde.

Chapman then hit a 3-pointer, two free throws and another triple as Fairland went up 19-11 to end the quarter.

Sidwell came back to within 19-18 on a basket by Lyde only to have Simpson knock down a triple and it was 22-18. But Blair Penn’s 3-pointer got the Quakers within 22-21 at the half.

Simpson hit another 3-pointer to give Fairland a 25-21 lead to begin the third quarter. Sidwell then got a pair of 3-pointers and a basket by Pickens and took a 29-25 lead with six minutes left in the quarter.

The Quakers were up 38-30 after a 3-point play by Boasberg with 2:31 on the clock. Fairland battled back and got within 38-36 at the end of the quarter on 3-pointers by Chapman and Brittany Thompson.

The Lady Dragons were outscored 18-8 in the fourth quarter. A basket by Boasberg with 3:51 to play gave the Quakers their biggest lead at 49-36.

The Lady Dragons hosts Gallipolis on Thursday.
