Turnovers critical to Lady Vikings in SOC loss

NEW BOSTON — Turnovers are really a four-letter word in basketball.
Just ask the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings.
The Lady Vikings were guilty of 29 turnovers in an 80-38 Southern Ohio Conference loss to the New Boston Lady Tigers on Thursday.
“Obviously, you can’t have that many turnovers and expect to win,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.
Mariah Buckley scored 20 points and Kaylee Stone got 16 to lead New Boston.
Symmes Valley (5-4, 40) was paced by Jensyn Shepherd with 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Rachael Hayes added 10 points and four assists and while Kaitlyn Crabtree hauled down 14 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals. Payton Hunter also had four assists in the losing effort.
New Boston raced to a 23-8 first quarter lead as Buckley scored 11 points including a 3-pointer. Sammy Oiler hit a pair of 3-poitners and Kaylee Stone added another triple.
Shepherd scored six points for the Lady Vikings.
Tayen Hickman and Stone scored six points each in the second quarter as the lead grew to 44-13 at the half.
On Monday, Symmes Valley hosts Western.
