Vikings bounce back with win over Eagles

WILLOW WOOD — The basketball wasn’t the only thing bouncing back on Saturday night.
After a tough 74-68 loss at Green on Friday, the Symmes Valley Vikings bounced back with a 68-58 win over the Fairview Eagles.
“We had a really good team effort tonight,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Coffman. “This was a really good way to rebound from a tough road loss (Friday night) at Green.
“Everyone who played tonight really contributed. The boys did a really good job against Fairview’s press and mixing defenses.”
Layden Gothard had 19 points and four steals while Jack Leith got 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Vikings (6-4).
Austin Mannon scored 14 points, Nick Klaiber 10 points and Brock Carpenter had 13 rebounds.
Fairview — coming off a 62-58 loss on Friday to Boyd County — was led by Ethan Smithers with 17 points. Noah King scored 15 points and Garrett Greene had 12.
Klaiber hit a pair of 3-pointers and Gothard had another and the game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter. Smithers scored nine points for the Eagles (5-8).
Mannon had six points, Leith scored five and both Alec Carpenter and Klaiber hit 3-pointers as the Vikings took a 28-23 halftime lead.
Gothard was 4-of-4 at the foul line and scored seven point, Mannon had four points and Alec Carpenter hit another triple as the Vikings went up 45-38 after three quarters.
King scored nine points and Preston Ledford hit a 3-pointer to keep the Eagles close.
Gothard scored nine points and Leith seven in the fourth quarter as the Vikings started to pull away. Brock Carpenter scored six points and the Vikings were 4-of-9 at the foul line.
King hit a pair of 3-pointers, Smithers scored five points and Greene had six points including 4-of-5 at the line to keep the Eagles’ comeback hopes alive.
On Tuesday, Symmes Valley hosts Beaver Eastern.
In the jayvee game, the Vikings (7-3) fell 54-47. Luke Leith scored 18 with Justin White and Drew Scherer 13 each. Sewell and Beach had 10 each and Mays nine for Fairview.
