Chesapeake girls can’t overcome slow start in 45-34 loss

CHESAPEAKE — It was too slow of a start for the Chesapeake Lady Panthers to get going.
The Lady Panthers couldn’t overcome a two-point first quarter in a 45-34 loss to the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates on Monday.
Wheelersburg took a 10-2 first quarter lead s Mallory Bergan scored all six of her points and Kaylee Darnell had four. Natalee Hall made two foul shots for Chesapeake’s points.
Hall scored four points in the second quarter as five different players made a basket as the Lady Panthers matched the Lady Pirates with 12 points each and it was 22-14 at the half.
Haley Stapleton, Maddie Ward, Taylor Hicks and Shia Ervin all had baskets for Chesapeake in the quarter.
Ellie Kallner hit a pair of 3-pointers and Darnell had four more points for Wheelersburg.
Karli Davis scored four points in the third quarter as Chesapeake (5-6) sliced the deficit to 30-23.
The Lady Panthers but the deficit to just four points in the fourth quarter but were forced to foul and the Lady Pirates converted 6-of-8 free throws.
Leann Spradlin was the factor in the fourth quarter for the Lady Pirates as she scored all eight of her points including a 3-pointer.
Hall scored eight points, Webb seven, Davis six, Hicks five and Brooke Webb four points in a balanced Chesapeake offense.
Abbie Kallner scored 11 points including 3-of-3 at the foul line to pace Wheelersburg.
Spradlin and Darnell added eight points each with Bergan and Ellie Ruby netting six each as the Lady Pirates improved to 8-4 on the season.
Chesapeake hosts South Point on Thursday.
