OAK HILL — Kasey Murphy liked what she saw.
Murphy saw an opportunity to take advantage of her size as she helped the Coal Grove Lady Hornets beat the Oak Hill Lady Oaks 41-29 on Saturday.
Murphy scored 12 points as Coal Grove improved to 11-3. Emily Compliment scored 10 points.
“We came out and started off hot and played great defense in the first quarter. Murphy realized that she was one of the bigger kids on the court and got to the basket early and finished. Her strength showed in this game,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
Caitlyn Brisker scored 14 points for Oak Hill (9-7).
Murphy had eight points and Bailey McKnight hit a 3-pointer as Coal Grove took a 17-5 first quarter lead.
The Lady Hornets scored just five points in the second quarter as Oak Hill used a 3-pointer by Kasey Riley and 4-of-7 foul shooting to cut the deficit to 22-14 at the half.
“We got sloppy in the second quarter. (Emileigh) Bryant came in the third quarter and started being a force on the boards and we held them to two points,” said Roach. “We took control of the game at the start of the fourth.”
Destiny Dolen scored five points while Murphy and Addie Dillow scored four each and Coal Grove’s defense held Oak Hill to just two points and the lead was 35-16.
Compliment scored five of Coal Grove’s six points in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Hornets hold on. Brisker scored eight points for the Lady Oaks.
Coal Grove visits Fairland on Monday.
