CHESAPEAKE — Better shots, better results.
The South Point Pointers were more patient with their shot selection in the second half as they held on to beat the Chesapeake Panthers 41-39 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
The Pointers were just 2-of-12 from behind the 3-point line in the first half and shot just 37 percent from the field for the game.
“We forced a lot of shots (2-for-12) in the first half. We just started taking better shots in the second half,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise. “But give Chesapeake credit. They’ve improved.”
Eli Archer hit two baskets and Cole Mills made a 3-pointer as Chesapeake took a 7-0 lead to start the game.
The Pointers went on a 12-0 run that end on a 3-pointer by Chance Gunther for a 112-7 lead. Archer scored and it was 14-9 to end the quarter.
Tayshaun Fox hit a 3-pointer and South Point led 15-11 but Archer tied the game with a basket and Tylan Hutchison hit two baskets for a 19-15 Chesapeake lead.
Gunthers score and Douglas Shaffer hit a 3-pointer and South Point was up 20-19 at the half.
Mills hit a second 3-pointer to tie the game at 22 and a basket by Archer put the Panthers up 24-23.
But Gunther scored eight points including a pair of 3-pointers as the Pointers went up 31-26 to end the third quarter.
A free throw by Roger Staggs and a basket by Webb extended the lead to 34-26.
Two free throws by Christian Layne and a basket by Millers tied the game at 39. Webb and Staggs then each made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Pointers the win.
Gunther led the Pointers (5-6, 2-4) with 13 points while Austin Webb had 10 points and eight rebounds. Dustin McCarty added eight rebounds and Tayshaun Fox scored nine points to go with two steals.
Archer had 13 points for the Panthers (3-9, 2-4) with Hutchison and Mills getting eight each.
On Friday, Chesapeake is at Rock Hill. South Point goes to Ironton on Wednesday and visits Portsmouth on Friday.
