Lady Dragons pull away from Lady Pointers

SOUTH POINT — The shooting wasn’t outstanding this time from any range, but it was good enough.
After hitting 19 3-pointers on Monday, the Fairland Lady Dragons shot 31 percent including 9-of-29 from the arc as they got past the stubborn South Point Lady Pointers 52-30 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
Fairland is now 17-2 on the season and 10-0 in the league. South Point is 8-7 and 5-4.
Allie Marshall scored 15 points and had five rebounds for Fairland. Kelsey Warnock hit three 3-pointers for nine points to go with six rebounds and three steals.
Fairland’s leading scorer Emily Chapman had just five points but six assists and four steals. Alesha Simpson grabbed seven rebounds and had five assists.
South Point was led by Emilee Whitt with 10 points. Maddy Khounlavong had seven rebounds and three assists. Ashley Perkey had five rebounds.
A 3-pointer by Whitt put the Lady Pointers up 5-3 and Perkey’s basket at the 2:40 mark made it 7-5.
Marshall hit a 3-pointer to give Fairland an 8-7 lead and her triple just before the buzzer put the lead at 13-7.
Fairland took its biggest lead of the half at 18-7 on a 3-pointer by Simpson at the 6:34 mark.
South Point got within 20-14 on a basket by Madison Kerns with 4:19 on the clock.
Whitt’s basket cut the deficit to 20-16 two minutes later but Harley Lyons hit a 3-pointer and Taylar Wilson scored and it was 26-16. Leah Lawson scored with 23 seconds left in the half to get South Point within 25-18.
Warnock hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the second half and Fairland led 33-18. Perkey scored to end the streak but Wilson hit a basket and Lyons a 3-pointer and it was 38-20 with 3:47 on the third quarter clock.
Warnock hit her third 3-pointer of the quarter and Marshall and Lyons scored to give the Lady Dragons a 46-22 lead after three quarters.
On Monday, Fairland hosts Portsmouth and South Point visits Gallipolis.
