Every Tuesday, South Point Elementary students meet for recess clubs during the winter months.

The clubs offer a range of activities, incorporating student interests, from athletics to arts.
Bindi Staley, a fifth grader at the school, saw a need and approached administrative assistant Bill Christian with the idea of starting a sign language club at the school.

Christian said Staley took the novel approach of offering to teach the sessions herself.

Since then, the group of about 10 students has met every Tuesday where Staley, along with assistant and fellow student Kaylee Hatton, show the basics of the communications form used by those who are deaf and hearing-impaired.

Staley, who said she was first drawn to sign language after meeting a deaf girl and wanting to communicate with her, is a natural at teaching and holds the attention of her fellow students.

She said she hopes to pursue it further and is now teaching her skill for the second time.

Staley has shown great imitative and demonstrated leadership in offering to share her knowledge of a much-needed skill and the lessons she offers will go a long way to showing students the importance of reaching out to and working with those with disabilities.
