SOUTH POINT — Maybe there was only fumes left in the tank, but it was enough to fuel the South Point Pointers.
Playing their four game in five days, the Pointers rallied in the fourth quarter and beat the Huntington St. Joseph Fighting Irish 76-73 on Saturday night.
“We came out stagnant in the first quarter and we didn’t guard anyone,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“We played some subs in the second quarter and got a spark. (Roger) Staggs, (Chance) Gunther and Derek (McCarty) made a spark. Brody (Blackwell) hit a last-second shot right before the half.”
South Point (7-7) was led by Austin Webb with 25 points and three rebounds. Tayshaun Fox scored 16 points and had two key steals.
St. Joseph (6-7) had four players in double figures. Garrick Hopkins scored 19, Austin Wiles 13 and Isaac Bias and Noah Barton 12 each.
Besides getting revenge on an earlier 64-55 loss to the Irish, Wise said the win was important after the loss at Portsmouth on Friday.
“The third quarter was like a broken record,” said Wise. “In the fourth quarter, we made a couple of free throws late and Webb had a block less than seven seconds on the clock and Fox had a steal to win it. That was a big win after last night and heading into Fairland.”
Hopkins and Adkins each hit a 3-pointer and scored seven points with Wiles adding five as the Irish jumped out to a 25-15 lead.
Staggs and Webb scored four points each while Jared Whitt hit a 3-pointer for the Pointers in the quarter.
Webb had nine points including 5-of-6 from the foul line, Fox scored five points including a 3-pointer and both Douglas Shaffer and Blackwell hit 3-pointers as South Point outscored the Irish 24-9 in the second quarter to take a 39-34 lead at the half.
St. Joseph came out strong in the third quarter and rallied to take a 59-54 lead. Hopkins had seven points including a 3-pointer, Wiles hit a 3-pointer and got five points and Bolton added four points in the scoring surge.
South Point got six points from Webb, a pair of 3-pointers from Fox and another trifecta from Shaffer.
In the fourth quarter comeback, Gunther had four points including two foul shots, Whitt hit a 3-pointer and scored five points, Webb had six points and Fox had the big steal to seal the win.
Hopkins and Bias had five points each as they combined to make 6-of-8 free throws and Bolton scored four more points.
On Tuesday, the Pointers host Fairland.
