The St. Joseph Flyers beat the Sciotoville East Tartans 60-32 on Monday, but it was the defense that proved the most impressive factor.
“We played sold defensive. We guarded and kept them in front of us. I thought all 15 kids got down and guarded,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
“You can’t always control your offense, but you can always play defense. I was proud of our defensive effort tonight.”
Chase Walters had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Flyers (12-3).  Joey McDavid hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 14 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
Zach Roach drained three 3-pointers for nine points and had five rebounds and six assists. Isaac Whaley had five rebounds, three assists and two steals while Clay Willis had a game-high eight rebounds.
Will Shope scored 14 points for East (3-9)
Willis, McDavid and Walters all scored four in the first quarter as the Flyers took a 121-4 lead.
Roach knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, McDavid hit a trifecta and scored five points while Walters got four points and St. Joseph extended its lead to 32-15.
Shope scored seven of East’s 11 points in the quarter.
Whaley had six points, McDavid five points including a 3-pointer, Walters four more points and Roach a 3-pointer as St. Joseph outscored East 18-11 to build a comfortable 50-26 cushion.
The busy week continues as St. Joseph hosts Ohio Valley Christian on Tuesday, Rose Hill on Thursday and New Boston on Saturday.
