CHESAPEAKE — When things went cold for the Chesapeake Panthers, they went cold.
Chesapeake trailed just 33-30 after three quarters but could only must six points in the fourth quarter in a 49-36 Ohio Valley Conference loss to the Portsmouth Trojans on Tuesday.
Cole Mills knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 11 points while Eli Archer added 10 and Austin Jackson eight points for the Panthers (4-11, 3-6).
Matthew Fraulini scored 14 points and D.J. Eley 11 points to lead the Trojans (9-4, 5-3). Both players hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Chesapeake went on a 7-0 run to start the game on a 3-pointer by Mills and baskets by Tylan Hutchison and Archer.
Reese Johnson hit a basket, Eley hit a 3-pointer and Fraulini made two foul shots to tie the game.
Mills hit another 3-pointer and Eley’s basket before the end of the quarter put the Panthers up 10-9.
Jackson gave the Panthers a 12-9 lead but Danny Lattimore sank a foul shot and Daniel Jordan scored to tie the game at 12.
Archer sank two foul shots only to have Eley hit a 3-pointer as Portsmouth took a 15-14 lead.
Fraulini followed with a triple and a basket and Eley hit two foul shots to give the Trojans a 22-14 lead.
Archer’s basket before the half got the Panthers within 22-16.
Jackson hit a basket and Mills hit a 3-pointer and a basket as Chesapeake went up 23-22 to start the second half.
Lattimore converted a three-point play and the Trojans were up 25-23.
A basket by Myquel McKinley gave the Trojans a 33-28 lead but Hutchison answered to get the Panthers within 33-30 at the end of the quarter.
Fraulini hit a triple as Portsmouth took a 37-30 lead early in the fourth quarter. Kamren Harless scored for the Panthers but Johnson scored six points as the Trojans scored 11 unanswered points to lead 48-32.
On Friday, Chesapeake visits Ironton and Portsmouth goes to Fairland.
