The St. Joseph Flyers would rather be playing an NBA schedule.
The Flyers played their third game in four days but still managed to come away with a 51-34 win over the Rose Hill Christian Royals on Thursday.
Not only have the Flyers played a busy schedule this week, they still have New Boston at home on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Chase Walters keyed the Flyers win as he scored 28 points including 14 of St. Joseph’s 22 first half total. He also had 12 rebounds.
Joey McDavid hit a 3-pointer and added seven points while Jimmy Mahlmeister came off the bench to score six.
“Rose Hill plays a lot bigger schools. We got the job done and now we move all,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey. “We used these three games to improve our conditioning.
“We didn’t shoot extremely well, but we passed the ball well and played good defense. We got to play a lot of people.”
Rose Hill (7-13) was led by Kenny Wilburn with 12 points and Josh Keller hit three of the Royals’ six 3-pointers as he scored nine points.
Walters scored 12 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 14-12 lead. Kelly hit a pair of 3-pointers and Stephan Barker had another triple to keep the Royals close.
But the Flyers’ defense held the Royals to two points in the second quarter and Walters had four points to put the lead at 22-14.
Walters had seven more points and McDavid hit his trifecta and scored five points in the third quarter as St. Joseph extended its lead to 36-24.
Rose Hill began to foul in the fourth quarter, but Mahlmeister was 4-of-4 and Walters 3-of-4 from the foul line to help the Flyers seal the win.
Wilburn scored five points including 3-of-6 at the line and Trey Phelps added a 3-pointer for the Royals in the quarter.
