FRANKLIN FURNACE — Coach Dick Hollar knew what his team needed, and they delivered.
The Green Bobcats got their biggest win of the season as they stunned the New Boston Tigers 91-76 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Friday.
“We need a big win and we got,” said Hollar. “My boys played their hearts out tonight.
“Gage Sampson led us with 28 points as we pounded the ball inside to him. The bench came up huge again tonight. Rylee Maynard knocked down two huge 3s in the second quarter. Freshman Ethan Huffman did a fantastic job defensively against Sexton.”
Gage Sampson hit 14-of-19 free throws and scored a game-high 28 points for Green. Tayte Carter had 25 points while Tanner Kimbler hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 points.
A key for the Bobcats was converting their foul shots. They were 27-of-41 from the free throw line.
Kade Conley had 25 points to pace New Boston. Tyler Caldwell scored 20 and Kyle Sexton added 12.
“Tayte Carver was relentless attacking the rim. He also did a great job of containing Kade Conley who is one of the best players in our league. Tanner Kimbler got going in the second quarter hitting some huge 3s to extend our lead,” said Hollar.
Carver and Sampson scored seven points each in the first quarter as Green took a 21-17 lead. Sexton had six points and Caldwell hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Kimbler got the hot hand and hit three triples in the second quarter and Maynard knocked down two 3-pointers. Sampson had seven points and Carver six as Green opened up a 51-34 lead at the half.
Caldwell scored seven and Drake Truitt six in the third quarter as New Boston cut the deficit to 71-55.
Sampson had six points — he was 4-of-4 at the line — and Kimbler hit a 3-pointer and made two foul shots.
New Boston kept putting the Bobcats at the foul line in the fourth quarter and they responded by converting 16-of-31. Sampson was 8-of-12, Carver 3-of-7 as he scored seven points and Kimbler went 3-of-6.
Conley made two 3-pointers and scored 15 points in the quarter.
