Seniors key Dragons win over Trojans

PROCTORVILLE — It was senior night, so all five starters for the Fairland Dragons were honored.
The Fairland fans weren’t the only ones who were cheering.
The rest of the Ohio Valley Conference teams were glad they won’t have to see that quintet much longer as the Dragons routed the Portsmouth Trojans 69-48 on Friday to move a step closer to a third straight league title.
Kollin Van Horn led the Dragons with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Isaiah Howell had 16 points, three assists and two steals while Ty Staten had a solid game with six rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Keedrick Cunningham had eight points, six rebounds and two steals. Luke Thomas hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points.
All five are seniors.
Junior Ty Wilcoxon came up big off the bench with 12 points and two steals for Fairland (15-3, 10-0).
Matthew Fraulini hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points while Daniel Jordan added 13 points for Portsmouth (9-5, 5-4).
Fairland jumped all over the Trojans by taking a 22-9 first quarter lead. Van Horn scored 12 points while Howell buried three 3-pointers.
Fraulini hit a pair of 3-pointers for Portsmouth.
Things slowed a little in the second quarter but the Dragons were still able to expand their lead to 37-20 at the half.
Thomas hit a 3-poitner and scored five points as five different players scored. D.J. Eley and Jordan had four points each for the Trojans.
It was explosion time again in the third quarter as Fairland outgunned the Trojans 22-9 and the lead climbed to 59-29.
Howell hit a 3-pointer and scored seven points, Van Horn had six points, Cunningham got four points and Thomas hit another 3-pointer.
Fraulini had a 3-pointer and scored five points for Portsmouth.
Wilcoxon had eight of Fairland’s 10 points in the fourth quarter including a trifecta.
The Trojans got seven points from Fraulini and five from Isaac Kelly. Each player hit a 3-pointer.
On Tuesday, Fairland visits Gallipolis and Portsmouth hosts Rock Hill.
