CHESAPEAKE — Not only did the big men come up big for the Fairland Dragons, but the backup big man was a big factor, too.
Fairland’s 6-foot-8 Kollin Van Horn had 16 points and 10 rebounds and 6-4 Isaiah Howell got a game-high 21 points to lead the Dragons to a 67-52 win over the Waverly Tigers on Saturday in the annual Beast of the Southeast.
But Van Horn was not only in foul trouble, he also fouled out. That cause Ty Wilcoxon to get some extra playing time.
Wilcoxon filled in well as she scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds as Fairland improved to 18-3 on the season.
Waverly had a balanced offense led by Clayton Howell with12 points — all on 3-pointers — and he had four rebounds.
Landon Hoover and Easton Wolf scored eight points each and Ethan Dunn had three rebounds. Ethan Adrian had seven points and three steals for the Tigers
Waverly took a 14-12 first quarter lead as Howell hit two 3-pointers and Hoover hit another triple.
Wilcoxon and Van Horn scored four points each.
Fairland stormed back to take a 35-31 halftime lead as six different players scored. Van Horn hit a trey and was 5-of-6 from the foul line, Keedrick Cunningham had four points and both Luke Thomas and Wilcoxon each hit 3-pointers.
Waverly cut the deficit to 49-46 in the third quarter as six players scored led by Wolf four points and Cody Remington with three.
Isaiah Howell hit a trifecta and scored five points as five different players scored for Fairland.
The Dragons finally took control in the fourth quarter as they held Waverly to just six points.
Isaiah Howell scored 13 points including 5-of-6 at the foul line. Two of his makes were technical foul free throws.
Ty Staten was 3-of-6 at the line as the Dragons converted 8-of-16 free throws in the quarter. They were 17-of-30 from the foul line for the game.
On Friday, Fairland visits Rock Hill.
