ROCKSPRINGS — With the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings missing leading rebounder Kaitlyn Crabtree, someone needed to step up.
Kaylee Cade put her best foot forward as she hit four 3-point goals and scored 14 points to help the Lady Vikings beat the Racine Southern Lady Tornadoes 60-44 in the Division IV sectional tournament on Monday.
Jensyn Shepherd had another strong game with 22 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots as the Lady Vikings advanced to play top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Waterford at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Rachael Hayes scored 17 points to go with five assists and four steals in the win.
Southern (6-17) was led by Josie Cundiff with 10 points and Baylee Wolfe with nine points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocked shots.
Shepherd scored eight points, Cade hit a pair of 3-pointers and Hayes got five points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took a 19-8 lead.
Cundiff hit a 3-pointer and scored five points.
Cade knocked down two more treys and Shepherd scored four points in the second quarter as the Lady Vikings took a commanding 31-13 lead at the half.
Hayes scored nine points including 3-of-4 at the foul line as the Lady Vikings extended their lead to 49-27. Phoenix Cleland had five points including a triple for Southern.
Shepherd converted 4-of-5 free throws and scored eight points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Jaiden Roberts had six of her eight points for the Lady Tornadoes.
The Lady Vikings gained a measure of revenge after losing the regular season final at Southern 54-51 on Saturday.
Symmes Valley is now 12-10 on the season.
